‘Hang'n There’ Art Print by Vertigo Artography.
Hang'n There is a sharp, funny and completely original surrealist artwork that takes one of the most recognisable acts in urban street culture, shoe tossing. The global phenomenon of throwing a pair of tied trainers over a power line, telephone wire or overhead cable and delivers the twist that makes it genuinely extraordinary. Against a beautiful pale blue summer sky, soft white clouds drifting, the kind of sky that belongs in a lazy school holiday afternoon or a long summer in the city, a pair of dark navy low top trainers, laces tied together, are hanging mid air with the casual, permanent confidence of shoes that have been there a while and have absolutely no intention of coming down.
But they are not hanging from a power line. They are hanging from a jet contrail.
The white diagonal vapour trail of a commercial aircraft, the condensed water vapour left by a jetliner at 35,000 feet, cutting across the frame from lower left to upper right is the wire. The trainers are hanging from the sky itself, from the trail of something that has already left, from the evidence of a journey already taken. The absurdity is completely deadpan, rendered with photographic seriousness, no winking, no explanation which makes it ten times funnier and ten times more resonant than if it announced itself.
The cultural layers this artwork carries are rich and genuinely interesting. Shoe tossing, shoefiti as it is known in urban culture has accumulated a mythology of meanings across different cities and communities: rites of passage, marking a milestone, celebrating a first, neighbourhood signposting, pure mischief, the universal teenage impulse to leave a mark on the world that is visible, permanent and slightly inexplicable. Placing the shoes on a jet contrail adds the aviation layer, the freedom layer, the going somewhere layer, the sense that whoever threw these shoes was aiming not just for the wire but for the sky itself. The shoes are hanging from the trail of a plane that has already gone. Someone threw their trainers at a departing aircraft and somehow, impossibly, it worked.
The vintage film grain, warm palette and square format give the image the quality of a found photograph, a disposable camera shot from a teenage summer, something discovered in a shoebox rather than made in a studio which gives it an authenticity and nostalgia that perfectly complements the street culture subject matter.
Hang'n There is the perfect piece for sneakerheads, trainer collectors, streetwear enthusiasts, urban street art lovers, aviation enthusiasts, plane spotters, boys bedroom decorators, teen bedroom art seekers, man cave curators, skate culture fans, hip hop culture devotees, urban photography admirers and anyone searching for sneaker wall art, trainer art print, street art poster, aviation art, contrail art, shoe tossing art, boys room decor or a unique gift for teenagers that is sharp, funny, culturally intelligent and completely, permanently cool.
For boys bedrooms, teen bedrooms, man caves, skate shops, sneaker stores, streetwear boutiques, creative studios, dorm rooms, gallery walls, aviation enthusiast spaces and any wall that understands that the best art makes you look twice and then immediately want to know the story.
