The gold figures are the heart of this piece and they reward every moment of close attention. Two gold cherubs, classical Baroque putti, full of movement and mischief cling to and climb the central gold staff on either side, playful and dynamic against the deep purple of the mask. Two gold reclining female figures in the sinuous, flowing style of Art Nouveau drape themselves along the lower edge of the mask, caryatids, figureheads, guardians, their bodies curving with the same organic grace as the scrollwork that surrounds them. In the corners of the composition, larger gold figures reach and recline and tumble in the clouds, giving the whole piece the quality of a Tiepolo ceiling or a Rubens allegory compressed into portrait format and at the very crown of the mask, a small ornate oval medallion, gold framed, containing a miniature classical scene, a cameo, a locket, a secret carried at the highest point of the most regal mask in the collection.
