‘Desert Feather Duster’ Art Print by Vertigo Artography
A lone figure stands in the foreground of a vast red orange desert landscape, back to us, hands on hips, hat on head — the classic posture of a man confronting something enormous and deciding to simply observe it. Around him, towering sandstone formations rise from the desert floor in the warm amber light of the Middle East. Dust moves across the ground. The sky is wide and dramatic, clouds building above the canyon walls. This is Wadi Rum. This is the landscape of Lawrence of Arabia. This is the kind of place where history happens and the scale of everything makes a person feel appropriately small.
From the top right of the frame, descending from above the clouds, an enormous hand holds a feather duster — dark feathers, long wooden handle, the kind found in every household and now, apparently, in the hand of something considerably larger than a household. It is being swept across the top of the nearest sandstone formation with the brisk efficiency of someone who has a lot of ground to cover. The rock face raises a cloud of dust where the feathers make contact. The lone figure watches. He has seen many things in this desert. This is the most thorough.
Desert Feather Duster is Mother Earth doing the housework — restoring the landscape to its pristine condition after the storm, dusting off the ancient rock formations the way you'd dust a shelf, with the same casual authority and the same complete indifference to the scale of the task. The cinematic quality of the photography — the epic landscape, the dramatic light, the lone human figure dwarfed by everything — gives the surreal element its full weight. This is not a joke. This is a cleaning operation of geological significance.
This is the print for the study and the library, the hotel lobby and the boutique desert retreat, the travel agency wall and the geography classroom that wants something genuinely extraordinary above the whiteboard. For the Lawrence of Arabia devotee, the desert traveller, the lover of epic landscape photography who also appreciates that the universe has a sense of humour about its own maintenance.
