This is a serious wave. The wave does not know what it is carrying.
A massive swell rolls in from the open ocean, dark and powerful, breaking hard against a black rocky coastline in an explosion of white spray. The scale is enormous. The sea is the colour of deep water, grey green, churning, completely committed to its own drama. In the bottom left of the frame, tiny against the scale of everything, a lone surfer floats in the water. They are watching what is coming.
What is coming is a giant red hair curler, riding the face of the wave with the full authority of a surfer taking the drop on a ten foot barrel. The wave wraps around it exactly as hair would, the churning white water becoming the curl, the ocean becoming the hair, the curler doing precisely what it was designed to do, just at a scale nobody anticipated. A lone surfer rides the same wave below, dwarfed by everything. They are not having the best session of their life.
Curl Power works because it earns its joke. The photography is genuinely dramatic, this is a real coastline, a real storm sea, a real breaking wave of serious scale. The surreal element arrives not as a cartoon but as something that has simply always been there, hiding in the wave, waiting to be noticed. The pun, Curl Power, Girl Power lands the moment the curler does.
